Donald F. recently graduated from the Certificate in Welding program at Charter College and is now working in his field. He offers advice for students starting the welding program and talks about what is motivating him to be successful.
Charter College (CS): How would you describe your overall experience at Charter College?
DONALD: It’s been a joy. The instructors here are awesome. They walk you through everything from the second you walk in the door and they set you up for success. I graduated with a 3.6 GPA and all I had to do was listen to my instructor.
CS: How did you find out about Charter College and the welding program?
DONALD: I got a job as a helper for a welding company and saw where the real money was. It looked fun and it was something I was interested in. I was sitting and talking with my wife about what I wanted to do and an advertisement for Charter College came on our TV. I gave them a call and they told me to come on down and we’ll talk. A year and a half later, I graduated with the job I’m going to retire in.
CS: Tell us about your new job and how you got it?
DONALD: I got the job a couple of months before I graduated and they hired me as a helper. I had sent them a letter and told them I weld and was going to Charter College. I also told them that I was about to graduate. They told me to let them know when I graduated and they would give me a welding test. The company is part of the 569 Workers Union and they recently picked up a 14 billion dollar nuclear contract that will go on for 22 years.
CS: What advice would you give to students who are currently in the welding program that would help them prepare for the job market?
DONALD: First and foremost, you’ve got to want it. This can’t be something your mom, your wife or your husband says you should do. Once you come here, it’s pretty easy as long as you listen to your instructors.
CS: What is driving you to be successful?
DONALD: I want to make enough money to buy a home for my wife and three year old son.
CS: Are you happy with where you are right now?
DONALD: If life didn’t get any better than it is right now, talking about family and occupation, I’m fine with it. But it’s only going to get better. Life is absolutely superb!
