Marcos S. completed the Diploma in Heating, Air Conditioning, Ventilation and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) program and received his diploma in our fall graduation ceremony in October. With the help of Career Services, he is now working for an Antelope Valley refrigeration company that has been in business for over 50 years.
“Career services helped me find it,” said Marcos. “They helped me practice my interviewing and write my resume. They were a really big help.”
Before coming to Charter College, Marcos went to another school and worked as an auto mechanic. “I went to Charter College and took HVAC/R so I could earn more money and find better jobs.”
Marcos also chose the HVAC/R program because he likes to work with his hands. “I like to know how stuff works and how the components function. In my free time I like to fix and work on old cars.”
When Marcos was being interviewed for his new job, he was asked a lot of questions. “They took me to a storage room and pointed out a furnace, condenser, thermostat and other equipment and would ask me questions about each one of them. I knew the answers because of what I learned at Charter College.”
His new job is an entry level position but Marcos believes that he is gaining valuable experience. “I’m installing duct work and helping the other technicians. It’s hard work because I’m small and not that strong. But I enjoy it and the people I work with are great. They are teaching me.”
His advice for current students in the HVAC/R program is to study and learn the material. “You have to know your tools. Listen in class and be dedicated. If you need help, the teachers and staff will help you. Know your stuff!”
